IntroductionWhy ExileBelief and AnticipationWho Is Moshiach? The Messianic EraLets Make It Happen!

The Messianic Redemption will be ushered in by a person, a human leader, a descendant of Kings David and Solomon, who will reinstate the Davidic royal dynasty. According to tradition, Moshiach will be wiser than Solomon, and a prophet around the level of Moses.

Ever since the destruction of the Holy Temple, in every generation there is an individual, a scion of the House of David, who has the potential to be the Moshiach. If at any moment the Jews are worthy of redemption, this person would be directed from Above to assume the role of the redeemer.

In every generation there is a scion of the House of David who has the potential to be the MoshiachDuring the Messianic Era, the Moshiach will serve a dual role. He will be a monarch, ruling over all of humanity with kindness and justice, and upholding the law of the Torah613 commandments for the Jews, and seven for the non-Jews. He will also be the ultimate teacher, the conduit for the deepest and most profound dimensions of the Torah which will then be revealed by G‑d.

How are we to identify the Moshiach?

Moshiach is not identified by his ability to perform earth-shattering miracles. In fact, he isn't required to perform any miracles at all (although the performance of miracles doesn't disqualify him either).

The following are the criteria for identifying the Moshiach, as written by Maimonides:

If we see a Jewish leader who (a) toils in the study of Torah and is meticulous about the observance of the mitzvot, (b) influences the Jews to follow the ways of the Torah and (c) wages the "battles of G‑d"—such a person is the "presumptive Moshiach."

If the person succeeded in all these endeavors, and then rebuilds the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and facilitates the ingathering of the Jews to the Land of Israel—then we are certain that he is the Moshiach.

So it's my first time in Israel about a year ago, and I'm just trying to find a decent bowl of chicken soup for an affordable price in Jerusalem, and a complete stranger takes me into his home, gives me chicken, rice, bread and tea. Tells me his name is Eliyahu. I say, jokingly, "Eliyahu haNavi" and he says "Yep." also tells me where to find a soup kitchen, but I get lost on the way there... then my friend Avi, from a local yeshiva, shows me a soup kitchen where free meals can be had... oy do they deserve our tzedakah!

Or how about Avraham, from the Kotel, taking me in person, to an open Shabbos table... also in Mea Shearim... another complete stranger...

I could go on and on, the point is, just look out for each other. All this mishegas of who, what, when, where is Moshiach, I see as a giant goose chase.

How about just doing what's right given the circumstances?

Regarding criteria for identifying the Moshiach, as written by Maimonides we must consider that this is the interpretation of Moses Maimonides based on his scholarly studying, and his observations of the society in which he existed. One may be born of the people of Israel, but not be ‘privileged’ to study the Torah meticulously, but still influence Jews to follow the ways of the Torah, and observe mitzvot when and where he is able. We are of a society consisting of more than just that of the Hebrews and even though the Moshiach may wage ‘battles of G-d’, he must also consider that although the people of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are the chosen people, in order to bring about a utopia for all, the Hebrews are the catalyst to change, but may not be the only person in our collective soul. We are a collective of people with alternate perspectives throughout this earth, and yes we are One, but we must also act like we are One, which requires tolerance and patience of other perspectives.

First, God does not play dice with the universe and if there is to be a Messianic leader, the Moshiach, then God will illuminate all hearts and minds so there won't be this identification problem, surely.

Second, since we are deeply One, the chosen person will make it perfectly clear that this is a job for everyone to do together, and each and every individual is important to the process of ushering in an era of peace and an era that will remarkably change the face of the world. In fact, you might say that metaphorically the world as we know it will be destroyed. Why? Because in nature the lion does not lie down with the lamb, but we are getting glimpses into another world, and I know there are now so many web stories and videos showing just this, an unheard of bonding among species.

The issues of determinism and free will are crucial to an exploration of the Moshiach and this era. Also language itself. Because what's in the cards is a story, deeply coded, within the Hebrew letters.
